Two people apply for the same online personal loan on the same app, on the same day. One is offered 19%. The other is offered 27%.
Nothing went wrong. Personal loan interest rates are priced on the borrower, not set for the product. Knowing what moves your rate, and what makes you eligible at all, matters more than knowing which app you use.
Why people apply online now?
Applying at a branch used to involve an appointment, photocopies, a signature on every page and several days of waiting. Online applications changed a few practical things.
- Your documents are verified digitally: Aadhaar eKYC and digital bank statement sharing replace physical paperwork. You don't visit a branch or courier anything.
- You can compare before you commit: Eligibility checks are soft enquiries that don't affect your credit score. You can check more than one platform first and submit a formal application only once you've decided.
- The costs are disclosed upfront: Under RBI's Digital Lending Guidelines, you get a Key Fact Statement before accepting. It lists the APR, all charges and the repayment schedule in a standard format.
- No collateral is needed: Personal loans are unsecured, so you don't pledge property, gold or deposits.
- You don't have to explain the purpose: A wedding, a phone, home repairs, a course fee or something else entirely: the reason is yours. Lenders assess whether you can repay, not what you're spending on.
There's one trade-off. Speed makes it easy to skip the thinking, and people searching for urgent loans are exactly who fraudulent apps target. Our guide to borrowing responsibly when you need money fast covers the warning signs.
Eligibility: who qualifies
For Prefr, the baseline criteria are:
| Criteria | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Age | 21 to 55 years |
| Net monthly income | ₹15,000 or more |
| Credit score | 650 or above |
| Employment | Salaried or self-employed |
| Documents | PAN, Aadhaar, income proof, bank statements (all digital) |
Meeting these makes you eligible to apply. It doesn't guarantee an offer. The final decision rests with the lending partner assessing your full profile: Aditya Birla Capital, Poonawalla Fincorp, SMFG India Credit, MAS Financial Services, Si Creva Capital Services or Respo Financial Capital.
How does lending differ for salaried vs self-employed applicants?
Salaried applicants are assessed mainly on salary credits, employer and how long they've been in the job. Self-employed applicants are assessed on bank statements, business vintage and, where requested, ITRs.
Irregular deposits don't disqualify you. They lead the lender to look at a longer period of statements to see your average income.
Why eligible applicants still get declined
These are the most common reasons:
- Existing EMIs are too high: Most lenders want total EMI obligations, including the new loan, to stay within 50% to 60% of net monthly income.
- Recent missed payments: A missed EMI or credit card payment in the last few months carries more weight than an older one.
- Too many recent applications: Each formal application is a hard enquiry, and several in a short window make lenders cautious.
- A thin credit history: No loans or cards means little repayment history for the lender to assess.
You're entitled to ask for the reason. It tells you what to fix before applying again.
How is personal loan interest rate decided?
Prefr's lending partners offer rates from 18% to 30% per annum. Where you fall in that range depends on how the lender reads your risk.
| Factor | How it affects your rate |
|---|---|
| Credit score | Usually the biggest single factor. Higher scores get lower rates |
| Income level and stability | Steady, verifiable income lowers the lender's risk |
| Existing obligations | A lower share of income already going to EMIs helps |
| Employer or business profile | Established employers and older businesses are often priced better |
| Repayment history | Consistent on-time payments across all your credit accounts |
Interest rate vs APR
The interest rate applies to what you borrow. The APR adds the processing fee and other charges, annualised across the tenure. On a ₹5 lakh, 18-month loan at an 18% interest rate with a ₹15,000 processing fee plus GST, the APR is 25.4%.
When you compare two offers, compare APRs. Two loans quoted at the same rate can cost different amounts if their fees differ. Our EMI calculation guide explains this in more detail.
Reducing balance vs flat rate
Personal loans from regulated lenders are usually calculated on a reducing balance. Interest is charged on the principal still outstanding, which falls with each EMI. A flat rate charges interest on the original amount for the whole tenure, so it costs noticeably more at the same headline rate. If an offer doesn't say which method it uses, ask.

How to get a lower interest rate?
Some of these take time and some don't.
- Check your credit report for errors before applying: A wrongly reported late payment or a loan you've closed but that still shows as open can lower your score. You can check your credit score on Prefr.
- Pay down revolving balances: Credit utilisation above about 30% of your card limits weighs on your score. Reducing it can help within a billing cycle or two.
- Close small loans you're nearly done with: This improves your EMI-to-income ratio, which lenders look at directly.
- Space out your applications: Several hard enquiries in a few weeks can move your rate the wrong way.
- Choose a tenure that fits your plans: Tenure affects total interest more than most people expect. The EMI calculator shows the difference between tenures side by side.
What does the loan application entail?
- Check eligibility: You enter your phone number, PAN, date of birth and income. This is a soft enquiry.
- Enter your details: Personal, employment and income information, matching your documents exactly.
- Complete KYC: Usually through Aadhaar OTP, sometimes through video KYC.
- Review the offer and Key Fact Statement: Check the APR, the amount you'll actually receive after fees, the lender's name and the foreclosure charges.
- Set up repayment: Register an e-mandate through net banking or a debit card so EMIs are deducted automatically.
- Sign and receive the money: You sign digitally with Aadhaar eSign. With Prefr, approval is instant and disbursal typically completes within 30 minutes. It can take up to 24 hours depending on your lending partner.
Tenures run from 6 to 60 months, and loans go up to ₹5 lakh, subject to eligibility. For what can go wrong at each step and how to avoid delays, see our step-by-step application guide.
